Say Stand Up and Lead

“You can stand up or sit down as we worship—whatever you need to do to follow the Spirit—just feel free to follow the Spirit.” Somewhere over the last ten to fifteen years those lines have become much more common. And, in reality, they may not amount to anything more than a hill of beans; that is, as they contrast with the more traditional, “let’s stand and sing together” or “let’s stand and pray together” or “you may be seated.” However, there is a reason to consider being more directional in the leadership provided for a congregation, and it has little to nothing to do with pragmatics. It is actually an issue of key importance to doctrinal practice.
