A Listener’s Letter: Some Perspective on the Presidential Election and the Economy
I received this e-mail from a listener. It’s worth sharing as is:
Hello Barry!
I’d like to add my comments to your show today. I believe there are several reasons Republicans are behind in the polls :
1.) Historical Perception regarding democrat party: The phenomenon an analyst on your show pointed out a while back… that being “if the economy goes bad, people will forsake their values and run back to the party they think will take care of them”.
This was exactly the thought expressed by caller…who said she believes in the Christian values upheld by candidates for the Republican party but can justify supporting those who stand opposed to those values because she wants to eat and pay her bills. Therefore she will support Obama and the democrats because of her feeling that they represent the group that will best look out for her. She falls back on the idea that “democrats look out for the little guy”, etc.
During her comments, she indicates something to the effect that people in Plano can afford to hold to values (she is willing to give up) because they have food in their pantry and can pay their mortgage. I can assure her this is not always the case. I am one who lives in Plano that struggles to pay a mortgage and has been eating a lot of beans and rice lately. Especially this week as our family of 6 had a whopping $26 leftover to live on after paying bills 2 weeks ago. Our pantry was rather bare. I can also attest to the fact that many in Plano have lost their houses because of lost jobs.
Honestly hard times and hard life may bring difficulty, but how can you “trade” Godly values for a bowl of beans?! Esau used similiar logic when he lost his birthright I think…
2.) False Perception regarding current fiscal crisis: Democrats have successfully sold the idea that the current crisis is chiefly the fault of Republican Deregulation… which is absolutely not true. You know it and I know it, but many people assume that the democrat mantra is accurate. In fact the problem of the housing bubble and subsequent burst is due to Clinton/Democrat manipulation of the Community Reinvestment Act from Jimmy Carter days. They turned the CRA into a $1.4 trillion monster - coercing banks to deal subprime mortgages. They then used Fannie and Freddie to traffic worthless loans across the markets, putting the US tax payer on the hook when the bubble burst. All while lining their own pockets with cash. This was basically a backdoor process to tax everyone and redistribute wealth. This brings up my final point…
3.) False perception that the Democrat party “actually is” the party that still looks out for the “little guy”:
The Democrats have controlled the House for the majority of years since 1954, thereby controlling the major legislative branch of our government 43 of the last 54 years. Yet inner cities still suffer, minorities still struggle (Yolanda confirmed today), inner city schools are still far behind, inner city crime is rampant and the list goes on and on. Although Roosevelt’s Democrat party helped stabilize a broken nation and get it back on it’s feet again… today’s Democrat party is not that party! They have had lots of time and thousands of programs but have not solved the problems. They have betrayed the people and failed their best interests by only providing enslaving assistance programs instead of opportunities while stuffing their own pockets with cash. Obama buddy Franklin Raines got a $25 million golden parachute, lives in a 6.7 million dollar house and doesn’t have to eat beans. Current Obama financial advisors are former Clinton advisors who helped architect the CRA behemoth! Together they introduced a “change” that ruined personal finances, ruined national and global financial markets, fleeced us of our money while making themselves rich. News flash… they are not looking out for the little guy!
My background:
I grew up in Italian immigrant, blue collar, democrat family in NJ. My father was a depression baby who grew up dirt poor. Yet I never heard him complain about his lot in life. He never whined about lack of fairness. Certainly, he never looked to the government for a hand-out! Instead he worked hard. In fact he was one of the hardest working men I’ve known. Despite lack of education (he dropped out of school at age 15 to work in a shipyard to help his family) he worked to establish himself and raise a family. He served in the US Army Infantry in WWII. A proud sargeant who fought under Mc Arthur in the Philippines.
He returned home to work in a shipyard. He borrowed $500 to build a house for his family which he built with his own hands, by himself. After long, hard hours at the shipyard he worked nights and weekends to complete his house. He dug the basement by hand with a shovel. The house was small but comfortable and sufficient to raise 4 children. It is the house that I grew up in. My parents now in their late eighties still live there. My father is a tribute to the American worker!
My family is not unfamiliar with hardship and we know what it’s like to go without some things. But like my father before me I don’t ask my government to give me money. I ask for freedom to pursue opportunity!
